Green Initiatives



  • Southern has now invested 36 months of testing and retooling to surpass the government’s DOE 2012 energy requirements. We are proud to say that most of our product line can be purchased today already exceeding the DOE 2012 requirements while saving you 28% to 30% in energy costs.

  • Southern utilizes energy efficient fan motors on all cases as a standard rather than as an up charge option.

  • For self-contained cases, Southern designs and manufactures cases that feature extremely efficient condensers while continually improving with ever increasing technologies.

  • We use an Earth-friendly foam for the insulation in all tub basins, which is environmentally benign, as opposed to polyurethane foam.

  • Southern’s method of pre-piping cases at our facility saves money at install, but also reduces waste due to effciencies inherent to our systems that aren’t present at installion sites.

  • Recycled plastics are always used for bumper mold and trim materials.

  • Southern recycles 100% of the liner material remaining during the manufacture our tub basins. The remaining material is reconstituted into a usable substrate and returned back to us, thus completing the cycle. By recycling and reusing this scrap material, we eliminate waste and costs while keeping superflouous refuse out of our landfills.

  • Propane powered lift trucks have been converted to battery operated electric lift trucks.

  • Materials otherwise destined for landfills have been recycled by Southern in the manufacture of our self-contained cases resulting in 750,000 lbs. of plastic being kept from the landfills.

  • Southern utilizes a heavy duty welded steel frame for most cases. This steel is forged in the U.S. from recycled scrap metal.

  • Southern has installed skylights throughout the buildings to utilize natural sunlight in the manufacturing work space thus cutting energy required for illumination.

  • Southern provides, as an option, state-of-the-art LED lights which offer several benefits.

  • We have installed energy efficient, state certified T5 lighting throughout the manufacturing plant to reduce energy usage throughout the entire manufacturing facility.

  • Southern offers the option night curtains which can provide reduced energy usage of up to 40% when in use.

  • Southern utilizes all dry powder for a durable paint finish. This method has resulted in a huge reduction of VOC’s into the environment associated with the wet paint process.

  • Our paper, wood, cardboard, and aluminum can recycling program used throughout the office and manufacturing plant has been a huge success.

  • By utilizing reusable blanket wrapping for case protection during shipments, Southern helps eliminate disposable packing materials. Proper stewardship of resources and possible reuse is greener and more desirable than simply recycling.

  • An intra-office paper usage reduction program has been implemented to reduce waste while requiring the use of recycled paper when available.

  • Most components not directly manufactured by Southern are produced by local & regional sources, thereby conserving resources related to transport from overseas.

  • When possible, we combine shipments on air ride trucks which reduces shipping cost for our customers while saving fuel and resources by lowering the number of trucks on the road.
